Back in the "good old days", the only way for someone to access your application was to signon to the system and use the menus that your application provided. Those days are gone.
The iSeries has become a very open system allowing access through a multitude of methods. Without proper controls, these access methods become back doors. iGuard was created to close those back doors.
iGuard allows you to restrict access via FTP, ODBC, DDM, DRDA, SQL, and the Transfer Facility. Many third party products are available to utilize these applications to extract data from your system. For example, if a user has read authority to your customer master (which most probably do) and has Client Access and Microsoft Excel on their PC, they can download the entire file to their PC.
iGuard allows you to control access by disabling the applications or by enabling them for only certain users. Every AS/400 and iSeries shop must have a product such as iGuard as part of their security strategy.
